OPTIONS FOR STORAGE:
If your Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, or the Gulf Islands move requires storage, we offer a couple solutions:
Option A: We include a storage option in our moving quote, and furniture is delivered straight to your door at the new place when the time is right. We take care of the storage in house (typically storing on the Vancouver side) and, unlike option B below, a 2nd moving company doing a "local" move from storage to the new place isn't necessary.
Option B: We deliver straight to a storage facility on the Island that the customer has rented. In this scenario, the furniture will need to be moved "locally" from storage locker to the new place. If customer is renting their own facility, here are 3 important things to consider:
- The cubic feet (volume) of your furniture will be at the top right of your quote. From this important figure the correct size of locker can be determined. Note that the longer your furniture will be in storage, the more important it is to be precise and get this figure exactly right. (Renting a locker that is too LARGE over months and months will result in thousands of dollars being wasted, whereas renting a locker too SMALL will result in the unneeded stress of the moving truck arriving and not being able to unload, and then having to rent an additional 2nd locker (if such a locker is even available on short notice) that combined will cost significantly more than just one correctly sized larger locker.
- A "heated" and "individually alarmed" facility may cost slightly more than one that is not.
- Round "disc" locks provide superior performance over "traditional" design locks.
Note that in either scenario, it is especially important to follow proper packing guidelines when furniture is being stored. Sofas and mattresses should be wrapped in protective plastic. Mirrors and pictures should be wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in picture boxes. Make sure to visit our packing page for a comprehensive step by step guide on how to pack your furniture and other household goods.
Cautionary Note: Avoiding "Endless Storage" Scenarios:
This might be shocking to hear for some readers, but there can be an addictive element to storage. It is a very common scenario that storage customers go in with the best of intentions, intending to store for quote "2 or 3 months". Because it is only several hundred dollars per month, it is easy to kick the can down the road, and "deal with it later". Years can go by very quickly, and often times if said storage customer had known up front that they would be paying thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollars, they NEVER would have put their stuff in storage. But now it's too late...said hypothetical storage customer is not going to get rid of furniture that they just paid thousands and thousands to store- they are caught on the storage treadmill! 🙁
We caution anyone considering storage to use wisdom and not get trapped in an endless storage loop, where furniture is stored for years on end with no (foreseeable) exit date. Instead we advise to only put furniture in to storage if there is a specific entry date, and specific exit date (or exit "event", if exact date is unkown. For example, the completion of a brand new house).
